This works is a based of a digital scan of an 1819 bust of George Washington in Imperial Roman attire attributed to Ravenna as a copy of an original from 1792 by Ceracchi in the Smithsonian Institute’s National Portrait Gallery.
Washington is arguably the most heavily mythologized figure in American history- children are taught to revere him as father of the country, famously honesty and trustworthy, his refusal to be made a king. He was an enslaver but conflicted about it, and that his attitude “evolved” toward eventual gradual abolition but also only emancipated one person in his will and left 123 others enslaved in service to his wife? Don’t get me stated on what they did with the text at the Presidents House site at Independence Hall...
I cannot tell a lie, Washington is a complicated figure, are we all complicit in the complications? Can you see a little bit of yourself in there or is the reflection too distorted?
